CHAPTER 17

A little later Marty pulled her car into a strip mall parking lot and thought it was a very strange place for an investment company to be located. She checked her address to make sure she hadn’t made a mistake. The addresses agreed and then she saw the sign for the company she was looking for, New Investments, at the far end of the building.

She’d thought about the excuse she’d use for calling on the owner of the company and had come up with the idea of pretending to work as a freelance writer and a friend of hers had told her about an investment company who hired people who had been in prison.

Marty opened the door of the company and was pleasantly surprised by the tasteful way the reception area had been decorated. She walked up to the reception desk and said, “Hi, my name is Marty Combs, and I’m a freelance writer. I’m doing an article on companies that hire people who have been in prison, and your company’s name was given to me. I was wondering if I might speak to the owner or the manager.”

The young receptionist smiled at her and said, “I’m so glad that you’re doing that. I wish more people knew about companies like ours. The manager’s at lunch, but the owner, Jack Corbin, is here. Let me see if he has time to talk to you.” She stood up and walked down the hall.

A few moments later she returned and said, “Mr. Corbin said it would be a pleasure to talk to you. His office is the third door on the left.”

“Thank you,” Marty said and walked down the hall. She knocked on the door the receptionist had indicated and heard a pleasant male voice say, “Come in.”

“Hello, Mr. Corbin, I’m Marty Combs. Thank you for taking the time to talk to me.”

“Please, Ms. Combs, have a seat,” he said gesturing to a comfortable chair on the other side of his desk which faced him. “Susie told me you’re doing an article about companies that hire people who have been in prison. Is that correct?”

“Yes, I was told your investment company does that. Could you tell me a little bit about it?”

“Certainly. I served time in prison and had a conversion experience while I was in there. When I came out, I was a different man than the one who had gone in. I made a vow that I would show people by my actions and becoming a success, that ex-cons could make it in the world without resorting to crime. I accomplished that goal by starting this company which is designed to help ex-cons.”

“That’s very commendable. I know it’s often difficult for people who have served time in prison to find work. Since you own an investment company, I would assume that you look for people who had been in that profession prior to serving time. Would that be correct?”

“Yes. All of the people, the eight I have working for
